Luong Van Can Foundation organizes the training session “First Aid – An Essential Skill”
On the morning of June 8, the Luong Van Can Foundation held a training session titled “First Aid – An Essential Skill” for students and Mentors of the Foundation. The program aimed to equip participants with essential first aid skills to handle real-life emergency situations.
The session was directly guided by medical students who are postgraduate scholarship recipients of the Luong Van Can Foundation. These students are currently enrolled in the Residency Doctor Program at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, and they also have extensive hands-on experience working in emergency departments, operating rooms, and frontline hospitals in the city.
In the theoretical section, participants were equipped with knowledge of emergency scenarios such as cardiac and respiratory arrest, airway obstructions, heat stroke, and severe bleeding. Specifically, the doctors instructed basic first aid techniques including identifying cardiac and respiratory arrest, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), checking airways, using the Heimlich maneuver to rescue choking victims, methods to stop heavy bleeding, and preventing or managing heat stroke during emergencies. These are common situations in daily life, yet few people know how to respond properly—often leading to unfortunate consequences. Also in the program, students and Mentors had the chance to practice directly through realistic simulated scenarios. Facilitators divided participants into groups to sequentially experience various first aid techniques, such as practicing CPR on manikins, performing the Heimlich maneuver to save choking victims, and other key procedures. All activities were attentively guided by facilitators, helping participants gain more confidence in responding to emergency situations.
At the end of the session, the doctors also shared practical tips and important precautions when providing first aid. A key message emphasized by the doctors was the importance of ensuring your own safety before helping others. Only when we are safe can we effectively assist others. Therefore, staying calm, protecting yourself, and identifying the correct method of aid are crucial.
The Luong Van Can Foundation sincerely thanks the postgraduate scholarship recipients for their wholehearted sharing of valuable and meaningful knowledge. We hope that the knowledge gained from this program will help students become more confident in handling emergencies, and always be ready to support and assist the community when needed.
